Google Phone… Really?!

August 30, 2007

Much speculation has been bantered around about the possibility of a “Google Phone”, kind of like the last few months before the iPhone was officially acknowledged.  How does the possibility of a gPhone play into GTD?  It’s quite simple, really.  With the full Google/gCalendar/gReader/gEtc. integration that the phone is sure to have, on-the-go-organization is sure to be a cinch. Will the phone actually come out?  Who knows.  I, for one, would MUCH rather pay $100 for a gPhone than $400 for an iPhone any day of the week.

21st Century Security

August 29, 2007

My girlfriend’s house was broken into last week. Unfortunately, she didn’t have an alarm system (she does now, and trust me, between the desire to be safe and secure and my law enforcement background, it’s a DAMN good one) so the crime went undiscovered until we got home.  That night, we started looking at security system options.  The problem (well, the BIGGEST problem) was that she had gotten rid of her home phone long ago and we just use our cellphones (more and more people are doing this these days, so it’s not really uncommon anymore).  Most of the alarm systems out there rely on a home phone to “phone home” to the alarm company when there is trouble or a system update.  Now, since more homes are going the route of cell-only or VOIP-only home phones, the alarm companies are having to update their game plan.  You may have to look a little harder, but trust me, there ARE options out there for good, safe systems that don’t require a land line.  DownloadSquad has a good writeup on the subject today.

Batch work

August 23, 2007

I don’t know about you, but every once in a while I like to go through my computer, and get rid of the flotsam and jetsam of programs installed.  I figure if I haven’t used it in six months, I’m probably not going to need it in the near future.  The problem with this process (until now) is only being able to uninstall one program at a time, and not being able to start another uninstall until the previous is finished.  That problem is no more with the Absolute Uninstaller.  This program allows you to select which programs you want to uninstall, add them to a queue, and walk away knowing that when you come back, your computer will be a little lighter on the HD side.

Firefox goes to school

August 22, 2007

With the start of school upon us (it’s actually already started where I am) there is a deluge of “back to school” specials, products, and events. Add to that list a browser! Mozilla has produced a “Campus Edition” of Firefox which bundles the popular browser with other applications like Zotero (a research and source-citing plugin), StumbleUpon (random, “I’m feeling lucky” site plugin) and FoxyTunes (allows you to control your media player from within Firefox).
